The Great Outdoors

Liar, Liar!

Yup....I lied. I don't have anything completed to show you. I even contemplated finding a half done project to finish up but out of allllll the half done projects I have none can be quickly finished. Let's be honest I didn't really even start one of the projects I'm making from the materials I showed you the other day. Ok, I started one but didn't get very far...YET!

My main excuse is that is was near 100 degrees here all weekend so I HAD to spend the time outside in a pool. It wouldn't have been right to be locked inside. Then...when I was going to work on something today I got a splinter under my nail! And it broke! And part of the wood is still there throbbing!

I got the splinter while photographing some boots out on my deck.

I bought these sweet kicks on Ebay but they didn't fit so I just re-listed them. It's my first Ebay listing. We'll see how it goes. I have hope since when I was bidding on them there were others right there with me.

Also I realise I post I wrote never posted and I have no idea why. It was a Happy B-day to my Dad post with some picts of the "Miniature Golf," game we set up in my parents yard. My hole was themed, "The Garden State." Here's a peek at it.

...and...I ....Promise I'll get to work!

Lookin' Good Teak Wood

I had an action packed Memorial Day weekend which resulted in me getting a mother of a cold. I think my demise was when I first got a scratchy throat I continued on with my plans as though nothing was wrong. Then on Sunday I went camping and although it was quite lovely around the campfire as soon as you stepped away it was pretty darn chilly. Not good for a girl with a cold coming on. And now here we are two days later and I'm still feeling pretty crappy.

Any way here is a project Bill and I took on before the cold set in.
DSCN4740 When we got engaged his family gave us a cute Pottery Barn table and chairs for our deck. After two summers....ok...and one winter outside (ooops) here is how they looked.

Ok. This might not be the best photo to show it, but after sanding, restaining, then oiling the set looks brand new and I couldn't be happier.

So to celebrate we ate homemade cherry almond oat scones outside Sunday morning.

Happy Earth Day

Dscn4701
Happy Earth Day everybody! (And Happy Birthday Kristin!) I figured a seedling update would be appropriate for today. The zucchini and the tomatoes got big enough to transplant into larger peat pots. They were actually taking over the whole seed starter and crushing the much smaller herbs.

I also bought six vinca plants today with hopes of starting some outdoor pots this weekend. Technically danger of frost ends May 15th here...but the plants were already outside at the store.

Also for earth day here is a list of ways I'm trying to be greener. It will also help as a reminder for myself:

-use reusable canvas bags when shopping (like this one- shameless plug)
-turn off the faucet when brushing my teeth and in between rinsing and washing plates
-take a thermos to work as often as possible filled with organic fair trade coffee instead of buying it once I get in the city and throwing out a cup everyday
-keep my tires properly filled in order to get better gas mileage
-turn lights off when not using them and keep heat/ air at a reasonable temp
-turn my monitor off when not using my computer
-try not to get lazy about recycling (including stinky cat food cans)
- and keep dreaming of a hybrid, or even better solution, car

We actually celebrated Earth Day where I work today. I happen to work for a company that tried very hard to be environmentally sound. I don't really like to write about work but this part seems pretty cool/ interesting to me so I'll share it.

Part of what my company does is design and sell textiles. We carry several post- consumer recycled poly (post being soda/water bottles mostly as opposed to pre which would be waste from a factory or stuff we never see) textiles. At our celebration today we were told we will now recycle clear, green and blue plastic bottles that will go directly to a fiber manufacturer to be recycled and extruded into yarn that will go directly into fabric we sell. I feel that makes recycling a little more personal and interesting. I thought it was cool. Maybe that's just me.

And since I'm talking about work I'll just tell you that another thing we are doing that I'm very happy about is participating in the

The goals is to plant one million new trees in NYC by 2017. (I think other cities are doing something similar) A friend of mine at work proposed participating since we have a fairly large veranda, the company agreed to provide funds and a bunch of employees volunteered to do the work. On Monday two palettes of soil, planters and four or five trees to start will be delivered. It will be an ongoing project with additional plantings and continued maintenance but it should be fun, allow people who work in different departments to work together and give us a pretty sweet place to sit outside at lunch.

But really...enough about work

Unseasonably Warm

And I'm loving it. Unfortunately it won't last. It should be in the 30s this time of year in NJ but today was almost 70! Makes me feel like this...I took this photo at an orchid farm in Thailand.

First Snow

Unfortunately not enough to stay home from work, but here it is, the first snow of the season. It was a little earlier than usual and was gone by the time I got home from work. Oh well...it was purdy while it lasted.
